A Sad, Sad Day for Nashville Chickens

The bill to make backyard chickens legal was voted down by the city council this evening. 15 voted for, 2 abstained, 20 voted against. The bill can be reintroduced in 6 months.

So, I may need to take someone up on the many kind offers to foster the girls. Alternatively, I can live a life of crime and keep my illegal flock. This is unfamiliar territory for me, law-abiding citizen that I am. Who polices the chickens? Will I be fined? Will I go to jail? And, how do you broach the subject?
(“So person so-and-so in authority, if I did theoretically decide to break the law and keep chickens, what would happen to me?”)

Did the bill cover hens and roosters? I have noted that many urban areas, will allow hens but exclude roosters. The vote might be pro-chickens next time if roosters & their accompanying noise, are left out of equation.

Yep, the bill banned roosters and limited the hens based on your lot size.

We can offer a home for your birds if needed. There’s plenty of room in our new coop, the roost is long, there are plenty of nest boxes, and the rooster is a gentle, older crele bantam. We have an enclosed pen for the youngsters as well as plenty of play room in the yard for when the birds are out after nest-time. Feel free to contact me if you want some help with this.
